Understand the story.
Plan for the named closures
The visitor center and Dunker Church are among the places NPS plans to close beginning October 27. The closure also covers Dunker Church Road between Maryland Route 65 and Smoketown Road, Antietam Remembered Trail and the connector from the visitor center to Bloody Lane Trail. Work may continue October 28. This is a partial closure, and the notice does not name Bloody Lane Trail itself as closed. [1] [2]
Why the work keeps visitors out
NPS says old cannon ammunition in the O.T. Reilly Monument’s base might still contain explosives. Specialists are to remove 10 pieces, and the work will not be open to public viewing. This is the park’s stated reason for the restrictions; this report has not inspected the ammunition or observed removal. [3]
A temporary place to get information
Other battlefield areas will remain open, NPS says. During the closures, the park plans a temporary visitor-information station with parking where Dunker Church Road, Starke Avenue and Cornfield Avenue meet. That alternative is useful for a visit, but it does not establish that every route or facility is accessible. [4]
Check before a group or day trip
Open the NPS notice and closure map before leaving, and check the park’s current updates or call 301-432-5124. NPS specifically asks groups with planned visits to call before traveling. Follow detour signs, staff directions and closed-area barriers. October 28 is a possible continuation of the work, not a promised reopening appointment. [5] [1]
