Amazon’s October 29 results report $46.0 billion in quarterly AWS sales and a $42.4 billion company-wide free-cash outflow over twelve months. Paid cloud demand is growing; these different accounting boundaries do not establish AI-only profitability or customer value. [1] [2]

The reporting question: Does AWS growth establish AI’s cash payoff?

Demand shows up in a real revenue line

Amazon’s October 29 release reports AWS quarterly sales of $45.984 billion, compared with $33.006 billion a year earlier, and $17.773 billion in operating income. That is reported cloud business, rather than a funding announcement. It still includes services beyond AI. [1]

The cash comparison uses a different boundary

Across the whole company over twelve months, operating cash flow was $168.300 billion and net property/equipment purchases $210.657 billion. Amazon’s defined free cash flow was therefore negative $42.357 billion. These amounts cannot be read as the AWS quarter’s AI profit or loss. [2]

More tokens do not settle customer value

Amazon’s nearly sevenfold Fortune 500 Bedrock spending claim and nearly seventeenfold total token-volume claim cover different populations. They cannot be divided to infer a price or margin. The release does not provide an independent evaluation of customers’ task quality, reliability, retention or returns. [3]

Watch cash, costs and repeatable results

A plausible path is that paid usage eventually covers delivery and investment costs; another is that capacity and financing needs keep growing faster. Those are scenarios. Future segment disclosures and measured customer workloads would distinguish them. The $220 billion spending outlook is management’s plan, subject to supply and demand limits. [4] [2] [3]

What remains open.

  • AI-only revenue, capital allocation, inference costs and margins are not separated in this release. AWS segment profit and consolidated FCF have different boundaries.
  • No independent customer-side reliability evaluation, realized workload economics, retention or return-on-investment evidence. Bedrock denominators differ.
  • SEC exhibit and issuer release are the same interested origin. AWS pricing was publicly read, but its host is outside the installed case-capture policy; no workload-specific estimate is made.
  • No claim that growth must succeed, funding implies paid demand, cash outflow proves insolvency or a roadmap is a forecast.

AI-specific economics, independent measured customer outcomes, comparable paid-usage/retention cohorts or later cash/investment disclosures.
