Death Valley closes two paved roads after flooding; Badwater Road needs caution

NPS’s October 23 update closes North Highway and Beatty Cut-off after October 22 flooding and debris, flags debris on Badwater Road and closes Westside Road to motor vehicles. Visitors should recheck the park’s named-road status before leaving; an open campground does not verify a clear route. [1]

Separate old repairs

Bonnie Clare/Scotty’s Castle and Titus Canyon have separate repair restrictions. Do not attribute every closure to this storm.

Understand the story.

What changed after the storm

The park’s update, dated October 23 at 8:16 a.m. Pacific, names North Highway and Beatty Cut-off as closed because of flooding and debris from October 22. Badwater Road is listed under caution for debris. Westside Road is listed closed for flood damage under the motorized-vehicle restrictions. Those distinctions matter when choosing which roads to check before a weekend trip. [1]

Keep old damage separate

Some restrictions have different histories. Bonnie Clare Road and Scotty’s Castle remain closed for flood recovery, with no reopening date; that entry prohibits pedestrian access too. Titus Canyon is closed for repairs and excludes cyclists and hikers. Its anticipated reopening is a plan, not evidence that a road has reopened. The damage photograph on NPS’s page is labeled August 2023, not this storm. [2]

Check roads, not just destinations

NPS lists some campgrounds open, but that does not establish that a particular approach road is passable. Use the park’s current conditions page for the named-road entries and its linked state/county road information for roads outside park control. No through-route or detour has been verified for this report. [3]

Before you leave

Recheck both road status and weather for your travel days. Conditions can change quickly; the October 23 record is a dated check rather than a safety guarantee. Do not interpret a motor-vehicle closure as permission or advice to walk or cycle: restrictions differ by road and some explicitly prohibit those uses. [3] [1] [2]
