Death Valley revises road cautions; Lower Wildrose has washout and debris

NPS still lists North Highway and Beatty Cut-off closed after October 22 flooding. Its page captured October 24 now warns of washout and debris on Lower Wildrose, bars vehicles longer than 25 feet and discourages low-clearance vehicles or street tires. The earlier Badwater caution is absent; that does not establish safe passage. Recheck the park’s current named-road entries before leaving. [1] [4]

Understand the story.

What changed after the storm

The NPS page captured October 24 still lists North Highway and Beatty Cut-off closed for October 22 flooding and debris, with Westside Road closed to motorized vehicles. Under caution, Lower Wildrose Road now carries washout and debris warnings, a ban on vehicles longer than 25 feet and advice against low-clearance vehicles or street tires. The earlier wording that it was passable in most standard vehicles has been replaced. [1] [4]

Keep old damage separate

Some restrictions have different histories. Bonnie Clare Road and Scotty’s Castle remain closed for flood recovery, with no reopening date; that entry prohibits pedestrian access too. Titus Canyon is closed for repairs and excludes cyclists and hikers. Its anticipated reopening is a plan, not evidence that a road has reopened. The damage photograph on NPS’s page is labeled August 2023, not this storm. [2]

Check roads, not just destinations

NPS lists some campgrounds open, but that does not establish that a particular approach road is passable. Use the park’s current conditions page for the named-road entries and its linked state/county road information for roads outside park control. No through-route or detour has been verified for this report. [3]

Before you leave

Recheck named-road restrictions and weather for your travel days. The current capture has an October 24 page footer, but the Road Status heading still says October 23 at 8:16 a.m. Pacific. These source timestamps do not tell us when each road’s physical condition changed. Do not interpret removal of the Badwater caution as a reopening or safe-passage finding, or a motor-vehicle closure as advice to walk or cycle. [3] [1] [4]

Update · October 24

We replaced the earlier Badwater caution in our headline, answer and graphic after comparing NPS captures. The current page no longer carries that caution and has changed Lower Wildrose’s vehicle guidance. We do not know the edit/removal time or independently observed road conditions. Earlier versions and source captures remain retained. [4]
