Ebola reaches an eighth DRC province; vaccine protection remains unproven
UN News reports Ebola reaching an eighth DRC province, Nord Ubangi, while WHO says Nigeria’s patient exposure is still being reconstructed. WHO also reports no preliminary evidence yet that the Zaire-virus vaccine protects against Bundibugyo disease. These are separate findings; neither establishes local transmission in Nigeria. [1] [2]

Where it expanded
Nord Ubangi: eighth affected DRC province; no finding about cases across its border.
[1]What is unresolved
Nigeria’s exposure history and any onward transmission remain under investigation.

Understand the story.
A new province adds an access problem
The October 22 UN account identifies Nord Ubangi as the eighth affected DRC province. It borders the Central African Republic, adding a cross-border preparedness concern without establishing infection there. [1]
Nigeria’s exposure remains a question
WHO says investigators are reconstructing the patient’s movements from Uganda to Nigeria. The account does not establish where she became infected or whether onward transmission occurred in Nigeria. A contact is not automatically a case. [2]
A vaccine trial is not proven protection
Ervebo was designed for Zaire-virus Ebola. WHO says preliminary evidence of protection against Bundibugyo is not yet available. Research underway cannot be read as a demonstrated shield against this outbreak. [3]
Use disease guidance, retain the limits
WHO stresses finding people earlier, following contacts and bringing safe care closer. Its Ebola fact sheet explains transmission and the need for prompt medical care. Follow current local health-authority advice; this report provides no individual exposure assessment. [4] [2] [3] [5]

What remains open.
- October 21 UN News names the Netherlands in its affected-country list; October 22 names France. No country-total comparison or correction is asserted without the underlying record.
- The October 22 case/death totals lack sufficiently reconciled definitions and cutoff dates for a trend or fatality-rate calculation; none is derived.
- No independent case audit, personal risk estimate, confirmed Nigeria transmission chain or preliminary vaccine-efficacy result.
A revised original, new province or exposure investigation, contrary record, changed help destination or corrected data would reopen this exact account.
