Kīlauea’s fountains pause; USGS cannot yet time the next episode

USGS’s October 18 update says Kīlauea is paused after episode 55 ended at 9:03 a.m. HST on October 17. Summit reinflation continues, but HVO says it needs more data to forecast episode 56. Gas and unstable terrain remain hazards during a pause. [1] [2] [3]

The question: Kīlauea’s fountains have stopped for now. What remains hazardous, and can the next episode be timed?

Understand the story.

The observation has a clock

The October 18 HVO update follows the October 17 fountain episode. Its reported start and end times describe a completed burst at the summit. The retained status is a pause with reinflation, not an ongoing lava fountain. [1]

No countdown yet

The next episode cannot be timed from this update. HVO describes an unusual lead-up to episode 55 and says more observations are needed. Returning to a familiar inflation pattern does not prove that the old forecasting pattern has returned. [2]

The quieter view can mislead

Residents, workers and visitors still need to consider gas downwind and dangerous ground near the crater. The general emissions range in the notice is not a measurement of the air at anyone’s home or viewing point. ADVISORY/YELLOW is also not an all-clear for access or aircraft. [3]

Check place-specific conditions

Use the interagency Vog Dashboard for monitoring, wind-forecast and visitor-information links, and check park access separately. Keep the date and location of each observation in view. A later HVO notice can change this account; no start time for episode 56 is supplied here. [2] [3]

1.A dated pauseAttributed

HVO’s October 18 10:30 a.m. HST update reports that episode 55 fountaining ended October 17 at 9:03 a.m. HST, after starting at 3:19 a.m. HST. Summit reinflation continued in the update.

2.Forecast uncertaintyAttributed

HVO says more data is needed to forecast episode 56, because episode 55 departed from the preceding pattern. It is uncertain whether future episodes will return to the previously more predictable pattern.

3.Pause does not clear hazardsAttributed

HVO warns that gas can remain locally hazardous immediately downwind even without active eruption. Recent lava, unstable crater walls and ground cracks also remain hazardous. Alert level and aviation color code remain ADVISORY/YELLOW in this update.

What remains open.

  • The latest retained HVO issue is October 18, not a fabricated October 19 bulletin. Recheck later notices before operational decisions.
  • No location-specific current air measurement, personal exposure estimate or confirmed visitor clearance is supplied.
  • The source allows a return to prior periodicity or a different pattern; the observations do not yet distinguish them.
  • HVO’s introductory historical interval ends in August despite October observations; that inconsistency is not repeated as a claim.

A corrected original, material new disclosure, amended filing, changed access rule or price, verified outcome evidence or changed photo rights would reopen the affected claims and require an immutable revision.
