Texas and United States, 2025 household estimates reported by The Texas Tribune on October 29, 2026. Group medians, not changes for the same family; underlying ACS tables and margins of error not independently captured.
The Tribune reports Texas median household income of $82,625 in 2025, below the national $84,780. Housing pressures persisted, while property-tax relief differed by mortgage status. These estimates cannot tell you how one family’s budget changed. [1] [2] [3]

The reporting question: Did higher Texas household income make housing easier to afford?
Two medians, one year
The October 29 analysis by Joshua Fechter and Dan Keemahill puts Texas below the national household-income median. The chart compares the same year and unit; it does not measure a pay rise or living costs for a particular household. [1]
Rent and ownership diverge
The Tribune describes rents as largely flat while homeowners spent more on housing, particularly those with mortgages. A single statewide income figure cannot establish whether a tenant or owner became better off. [2]
Relief is uneven
Mortgage-free owners’ median property-tax bill fell about 4.2%; mortgaged owners’ was essentially flat, the analysis reports. That is a tax component, not the total housing bill. We have not independently captured the Census tables or tested whether reported changes are statistically significant. [3]
