Yellowstone’s car-access season narrows November 1; the northern route is weather-dependent
Yellowstone plans to close most roads and the West, South and East entrances to regular vehicles November 1. October 31 is the planned final driving day for most roads, weather permitting. The North–Northeast route remains the winter car-access exception, also subject to weather. Recheck park road status before departure. [1] [2] [3]
Check Yellowstone Park Roads, then its weather and operating-date links before departure. Scheduled dates do not guarantee access. →Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming and Montana: October 21 notice planning November 1, 2026 regular-vehicle closures. Understand the story.
What changed
The new notice identifies November 1 as the seasonal cutoff for most regular-vehicle access. Dunraven Pass is planned to remain open through October 31, weather permitting. These dates are still ahead of this report. [1]
Use the exception carefully
Winter car access is via the northern route between Gardiner and Cooke City/Silver Gate. NPS keeps the weather condition explicit. This is not a promise that all entrances, approaches, attractions or services remain available. [2] [3]
Make the departure-time check
Open Park Roads and follow its weather and operating-date resources before setting out. Keep plans flexible. The seasonal calendar and an earlier Open label cannot establish what you will encounter on a later trip. [3]
